A NEW YEAR OF CRIME FIGHTING IN BROADMOOR

NO DRUGS!  NO CRIME!  NO FEAR!

 BROADMOOR LIVES ON!

The Crime Prevention Committee of Broadmoor is dedicated to the reduction of crime and enhancing the lives of those who live in Broadmoor.  Those of us who live in Broadmoor are actually fighting crime every day by walking our dogs, riding our bikes, looking out for our neighbors, lighting our homes, and noticing on a daily basis the normal routines of our particular neighborhoods and streets.  This is a good start and, thanks to Virginia Saussy, our previous Crime Prevention Chair, much has been done in the last three years to reduce crime in Broadmoor.

This year, we are putting out a Call for Action.  Our major goal for this year is

                   To Increase Communication

The actions we will take to achieve this goal include the following:

  •      Neighborhood Watch
  •      Renewed Walk Broadmoor
  •      Installing Call Boxes
  •      More Working Crime Cameras
  •      Recruiting police to live in Broadmoor
  •      Crime Prevention messages on bus stop benches
  •      DA's Office Liaision at Crime Prevention Meetings
  •      Presence of the Broadmoor's Social Worker at CP Meetings
  •       Website Updates
  •       Crime Prevention Meetings

I am pleased to be the new Crime Prevention Chair for Broadmoor and can be reached by email at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it This e-mail address is being protected from spambots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it .  Please join us at the CP meetings (See meetings link for specific details and times.)

On June 6, 2008, two bicycles were stolen in two seperate incidents;
one from St Charles & Marengo and another from the 3700 block of S
Saratoga.  Due to a watchful citizen who observed the incident then
phoned police we were able to apprehend the two subjects and return
the bicycles to the owners.

Because the two apprehended subjects are juveniles the Police
Department is unable to release their names.

Call the police anytime you see anything suspicious in your
neighborhood.

To prevent bicycle thefts:
•       Properly lock or secure the bicycle
•       Keep the serial number of the bicycle and its paperwork in an easy
to find location
•       Take pictures of the bicycle for identification purposes

In one case, a Broadmoor homeowner was away from the home for only 90 minutes in the middle of the day. IF you see anything suspicious, please call 911. Trust your instincts. If you feel that something wrong is taking place, it probably is. Don't hesitate to call the police. Look out for your neighbors!

BIA Crime Prevention Committee Meeting, April 1, 2009

The following committee members were present:  Susan Ratterree, Chair, Barbara Snyder, David Snyder, William A. McLean, Kevin Caldwell, Danny Fitzpatrick, Lisa Fitzpatrick, Kelli Wright, Sue Mary, Letha Ratliff, Duffy Voigt

The following was discussed at this meeting:
Susan Ratterree reported on procedures going forward for the organization of Neighborhood Watch. Neighborhood Watch Officer TV Tran suggested the following:
-          Neighborhood Watch meetings should be carried out in small groups so that participants know one another and become involved. Best if meetings are held at a participant’s home, preferably outside in the front yard. Neighborhood Watch should strive for visibility.

-          Officer Tran will be available for four meetings covering personal safety, prevention of home burglaries, auto theft, the marking of possessions, and other topics. At the fourth session, he will provide a Neighborhood Watch sign to designate the participating area.

-          Individual Neighborhood Watch groups will call Tran to set up a schedule of meetings to be held once a month. Each session will last 45 minutes or so.
Ms. Ratterree reported on the last NonPac meeting. Asst. DA Graham Martin said that his office is working hard to improve police reporting for crimes in an effort to strengthen cases when they go to court. He said the aim is to go to trial within six months of an arrest. An effort is being made to have trials begin on time so that police officers scheduled to testify do not waste valuable time waiting in court.
She said that court watch volunteers are needed to monitor trials.
Walk Broadmoor: Walks will begin at the BIA playground. Walks are scheduled twice a month. Those making three walks (about two miles each) will receive a T-shirt. The first walk dates are: April 18th at 10:00 am and April 28th at 5:00 pm.
Police Housing Initiative: Plans are underway for an open house to introduce first responders to the program. Drinks and food will be served at the BIA headquarters. The aim is to eventually make 20 properties available to first responders.
Crime Prevention Flyer: Work is ongoing on the streamlining of the BIA’s crime prevention flyer. The flyer will be packed with information to help residents cope with crime in their neighborhoods.
The next BIA Crime Prevention Committee meeting will be May 6, 2009.
The meeting was adjourned at 8:30.
