1. Stay alert to your surroundings. Be wary of strangers approaching you for any reason. Do not be afraid to tell them firmly and loudly to “stop”. 2. Do not dig in your purse or wallet or talk on your cell when exiting or entering your vehicle. 3. Do not put your packages or purse on top of your car in order to open the door. 4. Do not overload yourself with too many packages or other items you need to carry. You do not want to obstruct your ability to move or see. 5. Ask store personnel for help with large amounts of packages. Ask mall security for assistance whenever you feel unsafe after dark. 6. Shop during the day whenever possible. Take a friend along when shopping after dark. 7. Do not carry a purse or wallet. If you must, carry your wallet in your front pocket. Make sure your purse has a secure shoulder strap and does not swing to the side or behind you. Wallets and purses are prime theft targets. 8. Dress in comfortable shoes and clothes and do not wear expensive jewelry. 9. Carry your license or Identification Card, and only the necessary cash, checks or credit card you expect to use. 10. Avoid carrying large amounts of cash. If you cannot avoid this, distribute it so that you do not “flash” a large amount of cash when you open your wallet or purse. 11. When possible, carry cash in your front pockets. 12. Pay for purchases with a check or credit card. Keep the receipt in your POCKET, not in the bag with your purchases. 13. Notify the credit card company immediately if your credit or debit card is lost, stolen or you see unauthorized activity on your account. 14. Check your credit and debit card activity and charges FREQUENTLY. It is easy to miss spurious charges amidst all the holiday activity. 15. Keep a record of all your credit card account and contact numbers in a safe place in your home. 16. Think about investing in a whistle or personal alarm if you work, shop or live in areas that are sparsely populated or if you often drive and return home after dark.
