History & Mission

Our History

The Broadmoor Improvement Association (BIA) was established in 1914 as a civic organization advocating for the newly developed Broadmoor subdivision. Officially incorporated in 1970, the BIA has played a vital role in the neighborhood’s development. In 2003, Broadmoor was listed on the National Register of Historic Places, recognizing its cultural significance. After Hurricane Katrina in 2006, Broadmoor was nearly declared a drainage park, but the BIA, in partnership with Harvard University, led a successful community-driven recovery effort, making Broadmoor a national model for post-disaster resilience. Over the years, the BIA has expanded its impact, providing social services, mental health support, and community programming, hosting over 3,000 events, and serving more than 23,000 food pantry clients in the last five years. Today, the BIA continues to champion equity, sustainability, and community engagement, ensuring Broadmoor thrives as a diverse and vibrant neighborhood.

Our Mission

The Broadmoor Improvement Association (BIA) is dedicated to fostering an inclusive, resilient, and thriving community by providing social services, mental health support, and neighborhood engagement opportunities. The organization’s mission is to enhance the quality of life for Broadmoor residents through equity-driven initiatives, including food security programs, counseling services, and cultural enrichment activities. By promoting sustainability, advocacy, and community-led development, the BIA ensures that Broadmoor remains a diverse, vibrant, and empowered neighborhood where all residents have access to the resources they need to flourish.
