On August 29, 2025, the Broadmoor Improvement Association hosted K20: Broadmoor Rises, a heartfelt event marking the 20th anniversary of Hurricane Katrina. Held at the Broadmoor Arts & Wellness Center, the day brought together neighbors, leaders, and partners to reflect on our shared past and reaffirm our commitment to Broadmoor’s future.
We were proud to unveil the Broadmoor Museum, a permanent space to explore the neighborhood’s history through artifacts, images, and stories. The day opened with a moving healing ceremony, followed by storytelling and a gallery exhibit, Broadmoor Remembers, Broadmoor Rises.
We were honored to welcome Mayor LaToya Cantrell as our keynote speaker, whose powerful remarks celebrated Broadmoor’s strength and urged continued civic engagement.
A deeply personal panel discussion followed, moderated by BIA Board President Caitrin Gladow, featuring David Schmit, Virginia Saussy, Hal Roark, and Arnie Fielkow. These leaders shared reflections on their roles in Broadmoor’s post-Katrina recovery and the hard-won lessons learned along the way.
Throughout the day, attendees visited our Community Room, where local partners shared resources on disaster preparedness, community health, and civic action.
In the afternoon, the celebration continued with live music, youth performances, interactive art, food vendors, and community activities. A powerful Memorial March, led by the Andrew H. Wilson Charter School Band, traced a route through key Broadmoor landmarks, ending in a moment of silence, tree planting, and intention circle—a beautiful close to a meaningful day.
We extend our deepest thanks to Mayor Cantrell, our panelists, community partners, and the incredible BIA board and staff who brought this day to life. And special thanks to Cajun Seafood for providing an incredible selection of finger foods that kept us nourished throughout the day.
