COMMUNITY LIGHTHOUSE GRAND OPENING IN BROADMOOR
The grand opening of the first two lighthouses of the Community Lighthouse project, hosted by Together New Orleans is on Saturday, March 25 at 2 p.m.
Both lighthouses at Broadmoor Community Church and Bethlehem Lutheran Church are fully functional in time for hurricane season, and will offer air conditioning, charging stations, food and water during power outages. They will also be equipped with portable batteries to power light medical supplies for folks living in the Broadmoor and Central City neighborhoods.
The Greater New Orleans Foundation, Congressman Troy Carter, Mayor LaToya Cantrell, and the New Orleans City Council supported the making of this project through their contributions:
$1 million from the Greater New Orleans Foundation through a “Leadership Challenge Grant” to launch the initiative
$3.8 million omnibus spending bill earmark by Congressman Troy A. Carter, Sr. - the single largest in the nation for a solar-related project
$2 million from the City of New Orleans, from Wisner Grant funds and American Rescue Plan Act funds
These two lighthouses mark the beginning of developing a disaster relief strategy that will include 86 lighthouses in the city of New Orleans when completed.
